Wild-harvested Buchu tea

Deep in the Cederberg Mountains, in its natural habitat, the wild buchu is harvested. Buchu, Agothosma betulina, is a native species of the Western Cape of South Africa. Buchu has a minty currant flavor and is rich in natural oils.

To protect the natural habitat, the wild-harvested buchu tea is only available in limited quantities.

Preparation

HOT INFUSED TEA:

Pour a tea bag with about 250 ml of 90°C hot water in a cup or teapot and let it steep for 5-10 minutes, depending on your taste.

Enjoy with a little milk, honey/sugar or a slice of lemon. The best drinking temperature is around 60°C.

With the hot brewed tea you can make a delicious iced tea.

COLD INFUSED TEA:

Put two tea bags with about 250 ml of cold water in a cup or water bottle and let steep for about 10 minutes. Do not remove the tea bags from the cup or water bottle. Store refrigerated and consume within 24 hours.

Optional Serving Suggestions: Add fruit juice or honey/sugar if you prefer a sweeter iced tea. Garnish with mint and/or a fresh lemon slice.

What Makes Buchu Tea So Special?

Buchu was introduced to the early colonists by Khoikhoi herders as an herbal remedy. It soon appeared in Europe, where it was officially listed as a medicinal product in the British Pharmacopoeia in 1821. From there it made its way to the United States, where it became a popular drug used to treat urinary tract disorders in the mid-19th century. Not all shipments made it to shore, however, as several bales of buchu leaves were included on the RMS Titanic's final voyage, according to the cargo list.

Buchu is one of the most important herbal medicines from South Africa. Today it is used worldwide in various forms to treat conditions such as cystitis, prostatitis, and arthritis, to treat bruises, and as a natural diuretic.

Its essential oil has also found international use in the flavor and fragrance industry. It is commonly used as a natural flavor enhancer in blackcurrant flavored foods and beverages. It is also a commonly used ingredient in perfumery.
