The Magic of Buchu: Taste, Health and Skin Care
Buchu (Agathosma betulina) is a shrub up to two meters tall with rounded leaves dotted with conspicuous oil glands protruding from the edges.
When the leaves are crushed, the essential oil released from the oil glands gives off a characteristic smell and taste of blackcurrant and mint.
The valuable oil is rich in isomenthone and diosphenol.
Buchu is restricted to South Africa and is a typical part of fynbos vegetation.
Buchu was an important part of the Khoi culture in the Cape and still enjoys an excellent reputation throughout South Africa as a general health tonic. The leaves are chewed fresh or dried or infusions are made.
It is well documented that these plants have been used for cosmetic and medicinal purposes since ancient times.
Preparation
Pour about 4 g of buchu leaves with about 250 ml of boiling water in a cup or teapot and let it steep for 5-10 minutes, depending on your taste.
Refine the Buchu infusion with a slice of lemon or ginger and enjoy.
The best drinking temperature is around 60°C.
You can use hot brewed Buchu tea to make delicious and refreshing iced teas.
