Effects of Buchu oil
The early Dutch colonists made extensive use of buchu or boegoe in the form of alcoholic tinctures for stomach problems and urinary tract diseases, and in the form of vinegar infusions for washing and treating wounds.
Due to its stimulating and invigorating effects, buchu is often used as a tonic to increase energy and stamina and combat fatigue.
Skimmelberg distills buchu oil from the buchu leaves, which is used in soaps and in skin care creams in the buchulife product range.
Buchu in powder form is also filled into capsules for oral consumption.
Buchu has a diuretic effect and is a mild urinary antiseptic that is taken to stimulate kidney function and to treat mild cystitis and prostatitis.
Preparation
Pour about 3 g of coarsely chopped buchu with about 250 ml of boiling water in a cup or teapot and let it steep for 5-10 minutes, depending on your taste.
Refine the Buchu infusion with a slice of lemon or ginger and enjoy.
The best drinking temperature is around 60°C.
You can use hot brewed Buchu tea to make delicious and refreshing iced teas.
